C. Mamilius Limetanus, 82 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.91 g, 5 h), Rome. Draped bust of Mercury to right, wearing winged petasos; behind, M above caduceus. Rev. C•MAMIL - LIMETAN Ulysses advancing right, holding walking stick in his left hand and extending his right towards his dog Argus, on the right, standing left. Babelon (Mamilia) 6. Crawford 362/1. RBW 1370 var. (differing control-letter on the obverse). Sydenham 741. The obverse slightly brushed, otherwise, good very fine.


From the Red Ox Collection and the collection of the Czech musician Adolf Picek (circa 1885-1978), and formerly in the possession of an Italian banker, whose life was saved by Mr. Picek in the Battles of the Piave River on the Italian Front in 1917-1918 and who presented his savior with 'four socks of old coins' in reward.
