C. Mamilius Limetanus, 82 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.61 g, 6 h), Rome. Draped bust of Mercury to right, wearing winged petasos; behind, M above caduceus. Rev. C•MAMIL - LIMETAN Ulysses advancing right, holding walking stick in his left hand and extending his right towards his dog Argus, on the right, standing left. Babelon (Mamilia) 6. Crawford 362/1. RBW 1370 var. (differing control-letter on the obverse). Sydenham 741. Minor graffiti on the obverse, otherwise, nearly very fine.


From the Red Ox Collection and the collection of the Czech musician Adolf Picek (circa 1885-1978), and formerly in the possession of an Italian banker, whose life was saved by Mr. Picek in the Battles of the Piave River on the Italian Front in 1917-1918 and who presented his savior with 'four socks of old coins' in reward.
