L. Manlius Torquatus, 82 BC. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 3.93 g, 6 h), with L. Cornelius Sulla, military mint moving with Sulla. L•MANLI – PRO Q Head of Roma to right, wearing crested and winged helmet. Rev. [L•SVLLA•IMP] Sulla driving triumphal quadriga to right, holding branch and scepter: above, Victory flying left, crowning him with laurel wreath. Babelon (Manlia) 7 and (Cornelia) 42. Crawford 367/3. RBW 1384. Sydenham 759. Light scratches, otherwise, very fine.


From the Red Ox Collection and the collection of the Czech musician Adolf Picek (circa 1885-1978), and formerly in the possession of an Italian banker, whose life was saved by Mr. Picek in the Battles of the Piave River on the Italian Front in 1917-1918 and who presented his savior with 'four socks of old coins' in reward.
