Q. Pomponius Musa, 56 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.79 g, 4 h), Rome. Laureate head of Apollo to right; to left, volumen. Rev. Q•POMPONI / MVSA Clio, the Muse of History, standing front, head to left, wearing long flowing tunic and peplum, reading from an open scroll held in both hand and resting her left elbow on draped column. Babelon (Pomponia) 11. Crawford 410/3. RBW 1485. Sydenham 813. A bright and very well centered piece. Minor areas of weakness, otherwise, good very fine.


From the Red Ox Collection and the collection of the Czech musician Adolf Picek (circa 1885-1978), and formerly in the possession of an Italian banker, whose life was saved by Mr. Picek in the Battles of the Piave River on the Italian Front in 1917-1918 and who presented his savior with 'four socks of old coins' in reward.
