P. Fonteius P.f. Capito, 55 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 4.00 g, 2 h), Rome. P•FONTEIVS•CAPITO•III•VIR Helmeted and draped bust of Mars to right; behind his shoulders, trophy. Rev. MN•FONT•TR•MIL Warrior on horseback galloping to right, thrusting spear downward at kneeling and armed enemy, who is about to slay an unarmed captive; in field to right, helmet and shield. Babelon (Fonteia) 17. Crawford 429/1. RBW 1536. Sydenham 900. Banker's mark on the obverse and the reverse struck somewhat off center, otherwise, very fine.
From the Red Ox Collection and the collection of the Czech musician Adolf Picek (circa 1885-1978), and formerly in the possession of an Italian banker, whose life was saved by Mr. Picek in the Battles of the Piave River on the Italian Front in 1917-1918 and who presented his savior with 'four socks of old coins' in reward.
