C. Coelius Caldus, 53 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 4.00 g, 1 h), Rome. C•COEL•CALDVS / COS Bare head of the consul C. Coelius Caldus to right; to left, tablet inscribed L•D (libero damno). Rev. CALDVS•III•VIR Radiate head of Sol to right; to left, S above oblong Gallic shield ornamented with thunderbolt, to right, round Spanish shield. Babelon (Coelia) 5. Crawford 437/1b. RBW 1550. Sydenham 892. Well centered and with a splendid portrait. Good very fine.


From the Red Ox Collection and the collection of the Czech musician Adolf Picek (circa 1885-1978), and formerly in the possession of an Italian banker, whose life was saved by Mr. Picek in the Battles of the Piave River on the Italian Front in 1917-1918 and who presented his savior with 'four socks of old coins' in reward.
