Julius Caesar, 49-44 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.90 g, 5 h), military mint moving with Caesar in Gallia Narbonensis or Hispania Citerior, 49-48. CAESAR Elephant walking right, trampling on horned serpent. Rev. Priestly implements: simpulum, aspergillum, securis with wolf's head at the top, and apex. Babelon (Julia) 9. Cohen 49. Crawford 443/1. CRI 9. RBW 1557. Sydenham 1006. Struck somewhat off center, otherwise, very fine.


From the Red Ox Collection and the collection of the Czech musician Adolf Picek (circa 1885-1978), and formerly in the possession of an Italian banker, whose life was saved by Mr. Picek in the Battles of the Piave River on the Italian Front in 1917-1918 and who presented his savior with 'four socks of old coins' in reward.
