Divus Valerian II, died 258. Antoninianus (Silver, 22 mm, 3.28 g, 6 h), Cologne, 258. DIVO VALERIANO CAES Radiate and draped bust of Divus Valerian II to right, seen from behind. Rev. CONSACRATIO Divus Valerianus II, raising his right hand and holding long scepter in his left, reclining left on eagle flying to right with thunderbolt in talons. Cohen -, cf. 5 (no thunderbolt). MIR -, cf. 911e (no thunderbolt). RIC -, cf. 9 (no thunderbolt). An apparently unpublished variety. Struck from a somewhat worn reverse die, otherwise, good very fine.

This coin differs from all other known examples from this issue in showing the eagle on the reverse holding a thunderbolt in his talons, a suitable attribute of Jupiter's sacred bird.
