Konstantinos, imperial protospatharios, 2nd half 8th-1st half 9th century. Seal (Lead, 29 mm, 13.42 g, 12 h). Large cruciform monogram ΘЄOTOKЄ BOHΘH; in quadrants, TⲰ - CⲰ / Δ૪-ΛⲰ ("Mother of God, help your servant"). Rev. +KⲰNC/TANTINⲰ / R'A'CΠAΘA/PIⲰ in four lines, with decorations above and after the last line. Unpublished in the standard references. Minor marks and a scrape, otherwise, very fine.
By the time this seal was struck, the dignity of imperial protospatharios was still very elevated. Konstantinos must have been the commander of a theme or at the head of a major state institution.
