Leon, ek prosopou, 10th century. Seal (Lead, 28 mm, 13.62 g). Patriarchal cross with floral ornaments springing from base; the lower cross bar has a St. Andrew's cross at the intersection and two more crosses at the end of the extremities. Rev. ΛЄⲰ/N ЄK / ACOΠ retrograde, in three lines. Unpublished in the standard references. An impressive and very well preserved seal of charming "provincial" workmanship. Good very fine.
The title of ek prosopou means "representative", indicating Leon served as a deputy to a holder of high office. Judging from the crude style of engraving, he likely served as strategos in the border provinces, rather than as an aristocrat in the Capital.
