ISLAMIC, 'Abbasid Caliphate. temp. Al-Mahdi, AH 158-169 / AD 775-785. Hemidrachm (Silver, 24.5 mm, 2.00 g, 9 h), anonymous type, Tabaristan, PYE 134 = AH 169 = AD 785/6. Crowned and draped Sasanian-style bust to right; behind head, GDH ('kingship' in Pahlawi); before head, 'AFZUT' ('may increase' in Pahlawi); in outer margin, APD / NWKW ('excellent' and 'good' in Pahlawi) and 'bakh bakh' ('very fine' in Arabic). Rev. Sasanian fire altar set on three steps, flanked by two attending priests (mabedh) standing facing; to left, date; to right, mint TPURSTAN ('Tabaristan' in Pahlawi). Album 73. SICA I, -. Walker, Arab-Sassanian, p. 156, O.10. Very rare. Struck from somewhat worn dies and with a minor edge crack, otherwise, good extremely fine.
