(x) Kushan Empire, Vima Kadphises (c.113-127), gold Dinar, 7.72g, bilingual series, bearded bust of king left emerging from jagged mountain top, wearing a peaked hat with decorated band and long streamers, he carries a club in his right hand and the hilt of a sword in his left, tamgha in right field, legend around starting at 1 o'clock: baiey ooh-mo kaΔΦichc, rev. Oesho stands facing, head to left, a draped mantle on head, ithyphallic and naked except for a diaphanous garment, he holds a trident in his right hand with crossbar on shaft, a water pot and animal skin in left left, nandipada symbol in left field, tamgha in left, he stands on a flat platform with beads below, Kharoshthi legend around, starting at 12 o/clock and somewhat abbreviated: maharajasa rajadirajasa (loga isvarasaja) mahisvarasa vima kathpisasa (of great king, king of kings, great lord, Vima Kadphises) (Göbl 18 / 5 var; Jongeward & Cribb 268 / 265 var), the somewhat crude and incomplete legend may indicate a fantasy, intriguing die combination, very fine and extremely unusual.
The reverse die copies closely that normally associated with the 'King in Chariot' obverse (Gobl 5; Jongeward & Cribb 265)
Estimate: £2,000 - £2,500
