(x) Chittagong / Bengal Sultans, in the name of Ghiyath al-Din Mahmud, attributed to governor Chandila Raza named as Thandala Shah (c.1542-48), Tanka, 10.5g, mintless type, AH949, legend within a grid of nine squares both sides (G & G B. 1022 ; Mitch. Bangladesh & Arakan 263-4; Ali, History of the Muslims of Bengal, Vol 1, p.238), toned extremely fine and very rare (Tikkanen 102).
The issuer of this attractive and enigmatic coin is still uncertain. Goron notes that the legend has never been convincingly read, and it is stylistically unlike other coins of Chittagong or Bengal. Tikkanen refers to Ali, M. M., History of the Muslims of Bengal, Vol 1 A, p.238 and gives the names of Ghiyath al-Din Mahmud, Barbak al-Dunya wa al-Din (Abu Muzaffar Barbak) Shua Sultan (ruler of Mymensingh and Sylhet, son of Humayan Shah).
Mitchiner attributes the coin to Chittagong under the Arakanese governor Chandila Raza (Thandala Shah) as, in 1542 (AH949), the Arakanese king Min Bin conquered Chittagong for the second time and reportedly appointed him as governor.
Estimate: £400 - £600
