(x) East India Company, Bengal Presidency, token Rupee, 11.6g, Quarter-Rupee, 2.7g, 'Kalkata', the first with mint name Kalkata jaunpur, maker's initials A.S. in obverse field, ry 19, the second AH122-, ry 19, both with oblique milling, together with a similar Rupee token of Murshidabad, 11.2g, the first two extremely fine, the third very fine, interesting and unusual (3) (Tikkanen 602, 610, 611).
The book 'Indian Tokens: Popular Religious & Secular Art' by Michael Mitchiner lists a couple of similar tokens citing Kalkata (Calcutta). These were made by jewellers in Calcutta, and in the case of one of these coins, possibly also Jaunpur. Mitchiner does not list the particular coins in this lot, but there were many different types made and used in jewellery, following the popular model of the East India Company Murshidabad Rupee.
Estimate: £70 - £100
