Leo II and Zeno (474), AV Solidus, 9 February – 17 November AD 474, Constantinopolis, D N LEO ET Z-ENO P P AVG, pearl-diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed bust facing, head slightly right, spear in right hand over shoulder, shield in left decorated with horseman motif, rev. VICTORI-A AAVGGG, Victory standing left, holding long jewelled cross, star in right field, CONOB in exergue (RIC X, 906; RCV 21511; Depeyrot 107/1), lightly cleaned and struck soft on portrait, otherwise well-centred, very fine, and extremely rare.
From Roman Imperial Coinage, vol. X: The adoption of the normal VICTORI-A AVGGG, Victory and Cross, type is attested by one pair of dies only. The reverse die, without officina number, is the same as that used for the unique sole reign Victoria solidus of Zeno, confirming the dating of the latter, and showing that the change to the standard type did not long precede Leo's death
Estimate: £500 - £800
