Jotapian. BI Antoninianus (3.88 g), Usurper, ca. AD 248. Nicopolis in Seleucia. IM C M F R IOTAPIANVS AV, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Jotapian right. Reverse: VIC-TO-RIA AVG, Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm branch. Cf. RIC 2a (obv. legend); Bland 11 (same dies); cf. RSC 2 (obv. legend). Extremely Rare. Rough surfaces as found on all examples of Jotapian's coins. Choice Very Fine. Estimated Value $14,000 - UP
The revolt of Jotapian against the rule of Philip I and his son, occurred during the Autumn of AD 249 in Syria. Little is known of Jotapian. It is possible that he was related to the Severan dynasty as the feminine form of his name (Jotape) is attested in the royal houses of Commagene and Emesa. His coins are all extremely rare today, with Bland noting only 18 coins in total, and their decidedly crude style indicates a provincial manufacture, probably in Nicopolis in Seleucia.
Ex Gordon S. Parry Collection (Triton XII, 6 January 2009), 738; Credit de la Bourse (19 April 1995), 466.
