Theodosius II, 402-450 AD. Gold Solidus (4.49g). Mint of Constantinople, AD 426-30. Helmeted and cuir. bust three-quarter facing to r., holding spear and shield. Reverse: SALVS REI PBVLICAE, officinae S. Theodosius and a shorter figure of Valentinian, both nimbate, enthroned facing side by side. S-21144; RIC X 237-41; DOC 375. Boldly struck on a nice full flan with an over flow of metal on the outer borders. Intensely lustrous. NGC graded AU, Strike: 4/5, Surface: 3/5, die shift. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP
This issue celebrates the joint consulship of Theodosius and Valentinian (twelfth and second respectively) in AD 426. The younger figure of Valentinian shown as Augustus (smaller figure) and co-emperor enthroned beside his eastern colleague.
