ROME. 1st-3rd centuries AD. PB Tessera (26mm, 12.48 g). Prow of galley right; A / Blank. Unpublished in the standard references. Brown-gray patina. VF.
From the Dalzell Collection.
While the types on tesserae are not uncommonly derived from coins, particularly for the poses and attributes of various deities, it is rare for them to be directly copied. The prow on this token directly recalls the design common to Roman Republican bronze asses for centuries, and is striking indication of the survival of Republican artistic themes into the Imperial era.
