IONIA, Ephesus. Scrib. Paulienus, boularch. 2nd-3rd centuries AD. PB Tessera (17mm, 2.84 g). CKPЄI ΠAVΛЄINOY BOYΛ, eagle standing facing with wings spread, head left / Blank. Unpublished in the standard references. Tan patina. Fine. Rare full name and title.

From the Dalzell Collection.

Though the names Scribonius and Paulinus are known at Ephesus from epigraphic evidence, this particular individual is otherwise lost to history. The token names him as boularch, the highest ranking official of the boule, a form of civic council common in the Greek world.
