THE DUTCH REVOLT, Low Countries. Zierikzee. Besieged by the Spanish under the command of Cristóbal de Mondragón, October 1575-29 July 1576. AR Daalder Klippe (42x40mm, 29.41 g). Emission of 7 November 1575. Dated 1575. Civic coat-of-arms within circular pearl border; below, 1575 within ornate frame; civic coat-of-arms stamp above / Blank. Situated in Zeeland, Zierikzee, unlike its neighbor Middelburg, sided against the Spanish. Because of its strategic location and importance to the revolt, Zierikzee was besieged from November 1575 to February 1576. The city was eventually compelled to capitulate. In the ensuing negotiations, the Dutch were forced to allow those inhabitants of the city who were Catholic to enjoy religious freedom.
