The tiny letters on the reverse of this issue, as well as others found on contemporary issues, are commonly thought to be signatures of unknown artists, but Westermark thinks it more likely that they are initials of mint officials, though the purpose of placing them on these isolated issues is uncertain (see Westermark, Coinage, pp. 48–9).
