Diva Faustina I (wife of A. Pius) AR Denarius. Contemporary imitation, circa AD 180(?). DIVA FAVSTINA, draped bust to right / CONSECRATIO, eagle standing to left on thunderbolt, head reverted, with wreath in beak. No exact prototype in RIC III, but for similar rev. type, cf. III 270-1 (M. Aurelius under Commodus, eagle holds spear head in beak). 2.95g, 16mm, 6h.
Very Fine.
From the collection of Z.P., Austria, collector's ticket included.
This reverse type is not known to have been struck for the consecration issues of Faustina however it does closely resemble a consecration issue struck for Marcus Aurelius under Commodus. Perhaps the forger produced this denarius during the reign of Commodus using a Diva Faustina denarius which was still in circulation as the obverse prototype.
