Russia Russian-American Company 10 Kopeks ND (1816-1852) Pick Unlisted PMG About Uncirculated 50. The Russian-American Company was a royal venture founded by charter in 1799. Over time, Russian business interests expanded from Alaska, down the coast of British Colombia, into what is present day Washington, Oregon, and California. The present day towns of Sitka, Alaska and Bodega Bay, California can trace their history to the Russian-American Company. At trading posts, local currency was created and issued, some printed on Walrus Skin. This example is a small denomination that was lightly circulated and thankfully saved for posterity. All design elements are completely visible, including the manuscript serial number on the back. After 1867, when Alaska was purchased by the United States, the Russian-American Company's assets were transferred to Hutchinson, Kohl & Company in San Francisco. By 1881, the Company was completely divested into the Alaska Comercial Company, which today is owned by The Northwest Company in Canada. A little known trinket from the economic history of North America and very rare in any grade.
