Zanzibar Zanzibar Government 1 Rupee 1.9.1920 Pick 1 PMG Choice Fine 15 Net. Colonial influence on the small island started in the 15th century. Portuguese explorers were the first to arrive, followed by the Omani's, and then the British in 1890. As a semi-autonomous protectorate, a need for a local currency arose. At the time, Zanzibar was the largest exporter of clove. The Zanzibar Rupee replaced the Zanzibar Ryal, and was first issued in 1908. Interestingly, the Zanzibar Rupee was 1:1 to the Indian Rupee, and was circulated until 1936. It was also this time that the East African Shilling became legal tender. All denominations are uniface, an Arab dhow is noticed to the left, and a clove harvesting scene to right. Each scene is beautifully highlighted by Arabic arches that effortlessly adds to the broader tang of the design. The 1 Rupee is actually a difficult denomination, and should not be underrated in it's rarity. The Equatorial climate was not kind to circulated examples, especially the small type denominations, which means that they are mostly heavily circulated. This will in fact be the first time that we have offered this denomination. Zanzibar examples are always popular, always in demand, and there will surely be a lot of interest in this lot.
