KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III 'the Great', 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 16.14 g, 12 h), Unknown eastern mint. Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. BAΣΙΛEΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡOY Zeus seated left on throne with elaborate back, holding eagle in his right hand and scepter in his left; to left, Herakles standing to left, ready to beat Hydra with his club held with his right hand. Price PO (2) 15 = Prokesch-Osten, "Suite des monnaies inédites d'or et d'argent d' Alexander le Grand," NZ 3 (1871), 15 (Phaestos in Crete). Extremely rare and unusual. Price was not able to see a single example of this type in order to confirm its existence, so the type was not included in the corpus. Struck on a very tight flan, otherwise, very fine.
