KINGS OF MACEDON. Antigonos II Gonatas, 277/6-239 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 31.5 mm, 17.03 g, 3 h), "dramatic style", Amphipolis, circa 252/1-246. Horned head of Pan to left, within the center of a Macedonian shield. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANTIΓONOΥ Athena Alkidemos striding left; to left, Macedonian helmet with transverse crest; to right, monogram of EYPM. Panagopoulou Period II, Group 14, 56 corr. (O09/R- obverse die erroneously noted as O11 and unrecorded reverse die). Interesting variation, as the monogram is slightly different to the ones recorded, with the P missing from the right side, and possibly embedded in the left, merged with the E. Very fine.

This coin is struck certainly from the obverse die that struck Panagopoulou 38-40, which according to the author is die O09. In group 14 where this group belongs, numbers 54-55 are according to the text struck from the same die (O09), which is easy enough to notice that they have nothing to do with the dies used to strike 38-40. On the other hand, #56 which according to the author is struck by die O11, is struck from the same obverse die as the present example but from a slightly prior state....
