PTOLEMAIC KINGS OF EGYPT. Ptolemy III Euergetes, 246-222 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 14.20 g, 12 h), unknown mint, perhaps somewhere in the area of north-west Asia Minor. Diademed head of Ptolemy to right, wearing aegis around neck. Rev. Eagle with closed wings standing left on thunderbolt; to left, ΔH monogram. CPE 765 = Svoronos 1261. SNG Copenhagen -. Extremely rare. Svoronos and Lorber only cited a single example, but that coin is struck from an obverse die that is quite different from the one here. Of an unusual and distinctive style, clearly struck in a temporary mint during Ptolemy III's campaigns. Obverse very slightly double-struck. Good very fine.
