"Piratini" Fantasy Counterstamped 80 Reis ND VF Details (Environmental Damage) NGC, LMB-780 (this coin plated prior to 16th edition). C/S (AU Strong). A fantasy issued in the early 20th century in allusion to the proclaimed Riograndense Republic, a breakaway state that declared its independence from Brazil in September of 1836. This short-lived state was pejoratively nicknamed by its opponents (the Brazilian Imperialists) as the Piratini Republic after the small Piratini village, so as to downplay the size of the revolution. The famous scholar Kurt Prober, in the 1940's, had once believed it was a period countermark, which was later dismissed by the further studies of researcher Claudio Schroeder, who presented at the Brazilian Numismatic Society his work proving that the revolutionaries actually made siege paper money instead of coins. This example is notable for its use as the plate coin in Livro das Moedas do Brasil through the 15th edition of the book.
