Louis XVI gold Louis d'Or de 24 Livres 1793-A AU50 NGC, Paris mint, KM617.1, Fr-477, Gad-61. Struck in the year of Louis XVI's death, and the final gold coin to feature his portrait, with this type being replaced later in the same year by the "24 Livres" obverse. This rare issue stands at a crossroads between France's historical monarchy and the new ideals of the French Revolution, which is made easily apparent by the portrait of Louis as "King of the French" to the obverse, juxtaposed with the celebration of "the reign of law" and proclamation of the "fifth year of liberty" (referring 1789, when the Revolution began) to the reverse. Though Louis would soon lose his head, France's struggles for independence, and later, hegemony, were just beginning, and the restoration of the monarchy would not occur for another 21 years. Toned to a pleasing amber-tinged gold with traces of residual luster throughout, a hint of reverse adjustment noted for accuracy. Though the NGC census notes 21 examples certified to date, we have confirmed that this represents a misleading case of lumping this type's certification figures together with those of the more attainable "24 Livres" obverse type, making this issue significantly less available than what is implied by NGC's numbers.
