Great Britain
Anglo-Viking - Danish East Anglia. Anonymous St. Edmund Memorial Penny ND (c. 895-910) MS63 NGC, Uncertain mint in East Anglia, Asten(?) as moneyer, S-960, N-483. 1.41gm. + SC EΛDI, A with crossbar / +ΛZESTEN (Z retrograde, S on side), small cross. A fascinating Penny from the Viking era, preserved at the very top of NGC's census for this coinage. Both sides remain highly lustrous and virtually unblemished, with the reverse in particular showing residual die polish. It is interesting to note that moneyer by the name of Azestan is not listed by North. It is possible that this is represented by his reading "Asten," though we have been able to find no examples with either name in recent sales archives, nor recorded in the Early Medieval Corpus or Portable Antiquities Scheme. Sold with old Baldwin's tag.
