Republic copper-nickel Pattern 10 Pesos ND (1871) MS62 NGC, Philadelphia mint, KM-Unl., Fonrobert-Unl., Ulex-Unl., Guttag-Unl., Stickney-Unl. A highly unusual occurrence within the Central American series: a seemingly unpublished off-metal strike or Pattern missing from all major collections, including Stuart, Farouk, and Newcomer, who, while they owned the exceedingly rare gold issue, did not contain a striking in this metal. Though well-known in copper, with the Richard Stuart Collection also containing a copper-nickel Pattern of the 5 Pesos, we are not aware of any other examples in this metal. Stickney indicates that dies and equipment for this coinage were ordered from William H. Key, assistant engraver at the US mint in Philadelphia, in January 1871 for the mint in Tegucigalpa. Though the shipment of these supplies arrived at the Port of Amapala in August, they were ultimately held up due to hostilities between El Salvador and Honduras, being captured by Salvadorian forces and not released until early 1871. Though assigned a seemingly conservative Mint State grade, there is little to indicate that this coin is below choice preservation, given its general originality throughout and paucity of stray marks.
