Mexico
Charles & Johanna "Early Series" Real ND (1536-1538) R-M/M VF30 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM0007, Cal-60, Nesmith-3b var. (obverse legend ends IOhA). 3.30gm. Francisco del Rincón as assayer. An early die pair for this elusive first coinage of the Americas, showing overwhelmingly Gothic lettering. Despite generally pronounced wear patterns over the highest features of the design, a remarkably good amount of detail remains for the grade, certainly aided by the coin's ideal centering on a full flan. Notably, this die pairing was missing from our 2018 sale of Isaac Rudman's early coins from the Mexico City mint. Sold with old Henry Christensen tag labeled "OKR 741564," and cited as from the O.K. Rumbel Collection, although this coin does not appear to have been in Christensen's October 1959 Mail Bid sale.
Purchased from Henry Christensen; Oliver Keith Rumbel Collection
