Philip V "Milled" 4 Reales 1732-Mo VF Details (Saltwater Damage, Cleaned) NGC, Mexico City mint, KM94, Cal-1106, Yonaka-M4-32 (R2). From the 1747 Reiijgersdaal Wreck. No assayer and denomination variety. A seldom-seen early milled type, perhaps a Pattern struck with the matrix sent from Madrid, according to Gilboy. Bearing gunmetal-toned surfaces and very mild saltwater corrosion, due to its provenance from the Reijgersdaal wreck (sunk in 1747 off the South Africa coast). The last example we've handled, a VF Details (Mount Removed), sold for $12,000.
Ex. David Gray Collection (Stack's Bowers October 2014, Lot 457); Ponterio & Associates 89 (August 1997, Lot 789) [cover lot]
