Chihuahua. Ferdinand VII "Royalist" 8 Reales 1815 CA-RP XF40 PCGS, Chihuahua mint, KM111.1, Cal-392. Struck over a previous Royalist cast 8 Reales of Ferdinand VII (cf. KM123). The first date of this intriguing War of Independence issue, and reportedly the rarest according to Calico. This example certainly preserves the, as a rule, crude nature of its issue, though its preservation and eye appeal are notably above average. The surfaces are draped in a balanced steel patina, with no significant marks or other distractions noted over sleek, slightly glossy surfaces. For comparison, we would point to the Storck Collection specimen (Heritage Auction #3085, August 2020, Lot 31844), which, despite visible signs of cleaning, sold for $2,640 all-in.
