Republic silver Specimen Pattern 8 Reales 1810-Dated (1887) Mo-MH SP55 PCGS, Mexico City mint, KM-Unl., Guttag-Unl. A highly unusual back-dated 8 Reales Pattern, and the first such example we have ever encountered, with this odd piece missing from both the Guttag and Gerber collections. The only other auction appearance of which we are aware was in the Norweb Collection (Christie's November 1985, Lot 265, also ex. A. H. F. Baldwin Collection), where it was proposed that it may have been a date error, and that Mrs. Norweb herself knew of only 3 total representatives. Currently, one other specimen has been certified, as SP64, by PCGS. Buttrey and Hubbard later commented that this Pattern was likely made in 1887 in anticipation of the Patterns of 1889. It is interesting to note that this specimen contains light wear across the higher points of the design. Gorgeously toned, likely from longtime cabinet storage, and a coin that is poised to excite among series collectors. We are uncertain of the exact meaning of the "Proposed Centenario Pattern" designation on the holder.
