Republic gold "Single Shaft" Pond 1892 AU53 NGC, Pretoria mint, KM10.2, Fr-2, Hern-Z45. Single shaft variety. The far rarer and covetable of the Pond shaft varieties, so named because of the single shaft wagon tongue seen to the reverse arms. Seldom seen not only in a straight-graded holder, but assigned a truly appealing AU designation where a plurality of examples in the census congregate. Only mild surface friction defines the grade of this otherwise wonderful example, laden with residual luster notable under illumination.
