Ferdinand II (1479-1516) gold Ducat (Principat) ND (c. 1493?) MS62 NGC, Barcelona mint (in Catalonia), Fr-32, Cay-2325, Cal-97. 3.43gm. FERDInΛnDVS • D • G • REX (group of four pellets), crowned bust of Ferdinand right, shield of Granada behind / CΛSTELLE • ΛRΛ • COMES • B •, crowned arms of Castile, Leon, and Aragon, B-B to either side. Of exceptionally fine quality for the issue, showing a great care of execution that is often hindered by wavy flans and uneven strikes. Interestingly, this piece shows a mix of Gothic and Latin letters, certainly indicative of the changes occurring in Europe during the Renaissance in the 15th and 16th centuries. Far finer than the other representative we have sold in this grade, which brought $3000 in January 2020.
