Maracaibo. Provincial Royalist 1/4 Real ND (1813?) XF45 Brown NGC, KM1, Cal-102, Stohr-Unl., OAV-1/4R-ANC, Gomez-pg. 135. Surprisingly fine quality for this notoriously poorly made coinage, whose exact origin has been a subject of continuous debate. At one time supposed to have been struck by order of Fernando Mijares, Captain General of the Province, when the royal army became separated from the main force, more recent research by Luis Ponte Puigbo given at the Cartagena MMXXI Conference suggests that they were actually struck in Cuba, though they were used and accepted at ports throughout the Caribbean. Showing comparatively full detail over the lion and denomination, we have handled one other in this grade, which brought $4320 in our September 2015 Auction #3042, with a VF30 piece more recently hammering for $3000 in August. To date, only a single AU50 certifies more highly at NGC.
