Venezuela
Maracaibo. Provincial Royalist 1/2 Real 1813 VF25 Brown NGC, cf. KM3 (different type pictured), Cal-387, Stohr-Unl., OAV-1/2R-M. An extraordinarily rare, if somewhat crude, provisional issue, with their poor overall execution leading to the issue being subject to counterfeiting and a lack of public acceptance, leading to the withdrawal of the issue from circulation not long after its introduction in 1813. Noted by Ortega, Arrieta, and Vitiello as being assigned by some other scholars to Santa Marta in Colombia, the type does appear to follow the general style known from Maracaibo's other, highly varied, coinage of the period. Despite its low overall grade, the crisp detail of the reverse suggests a likely uneven strike from poorly engraved dies is more likely to account for its soft appearance, and indeed, the offering appears much nicer than the plate coin in Catalogo Monedas de Venezuela. We would note that the type illustrated under KM3 is actually a full Real.
