SPAIN (VISIGOTHIC): Leovigild, 568-586, AV tremissis (1.49g), Cordoba, 584, MEC I, Miles-30c, CNV-30, bust of the king facing, + LEOVIGILDVS REX // bust of the king facing, + CORDOBA BIS OPTINVIT, one of only a few examples known, NGC graded AU55, RRR. The extraordinary reverse Latin legend, Cordoba bis optinuit ("Cordoba twice obtained"), commemorates Leovigild's recapture of the city in 584 during the failed revolt led by his son, Hermenegild. The Visigothic king had previously captured the city from the Byzantine Empire in 572, during an illustrious reign that saw him conquer almost the entire Iberian peninsula.Struck from the same reverse die as the example at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia (---96/97). We cannot find another example of this type in an auction.
