CONGO (DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC): iron bell (294g), late 19th century, Opitz p.81 (plate example), 255mm tall and 106 x 53mm at the base, locally known as ngke, made with a bifurcated spiral handle and no clapper (struck instead with rubber-tipped sticks), a very pleasing example, used in ceremonies and as currency around the Ubangi bend in the late 19th century, VF to EF, ex Charles Opitz Collection.
