ALMOHAD: temp. Abu Hafs 'Umar, 1248-1266, AV dinar (4.63g), NM, ND, A-491var, a coin of historic significance, as all legends are identical to the normal dinars of Abu Hafs 'Umar (Hazard-533), except that his name in the obverse margin is replaced by abu ya'qub yusuf, the long deceased Almohad ruler, who is almost always cited in the reverse margin of all issues of Abu Hafs 'Umar, VF to EF, RRR. Abu Hafs was in conflict with the rising Merinids, who ultimately destroyed the Almohads just three years after Abu Hafs' death. This piece may have been struck by supporters of the Merinids in some remote Moroccan location or by other forces opposed to the Almohads. The calligraphy is rather crude, but fully legible.

Estimate: 550-650 USD
