GOVERNORS OF SIND: Farâs, before 850, AR damma (0.23g), A-4523, FT-CS23, legends Allah wali / farâs (?) / wa nasiruhu // muhammad / rasul / Allah, the finest example we have seen for this enigmatic type, VF, RRR. This important piece, along with Lot 1152 in our Auction 36, confirms that the governor's name cannot be 'Abbâs, as I previously suggested, as the first letter is either Arabic "F" or "Q", with no other letter before. We have been unable to find a name in the chronicles that fits this name. The weight standard and style of this type suggests a late Abbasid governor, shortly before the Habbarid takeover circa 854.
