Merovingian. Anonymous gold Tremissis ND (c. AD 580-670) AU (Reverse Scratched), Le Mans mint, Lopus as moneyer, MEC I-Unl., Prou-Unl., Belfort-Unl. 13mm. 1.16gm. LOP+VƧ+, Imperial-style diademed bust seen three-quarters left / +CINMAMIƧ, cross ancrée. A curious specimen that is by all indications excessively rare, with neither Prou nor Belfort recording a single Tremissis from Le Mans during the Merovingian period. Though slightly cut-off, the reverse legend very much seems to be a truncation of the Latin CINOMANIS. Interestingly, the very distinctive, if caricatured, obverse bust appears to be in the style of the slightly turned, "seen from in front" portraits of the Roman Imperial period, with the chest of figure's cuirass (?) seen full-on, while his sleeve is viewed in profile. Undoubtedly of immense interest to the Merovingian collector, with a small reverse scratch being the only detractor to an otherwise very handsome specimen.
