Merovingian. Anonymous gold Tremissis ND (c. AD 580-670) AU, Novo Vico mint, Flaulfus as moneyer, MEC I-Unl., Prou-1996 var. (see also Prou-468), cf. Belfort-3255-3258. 11mm. 1.23gm. +FLAVLFVS (first F with elongated cross bar), Imperial-style diademed bust right with profile eye / +NOVO VICO, cross potent above globule. A seemingly unlisted variety from this moneyer in Prou and Belfort; while Belfort documents 3 separate types from Flaulfus, these either feature a cross ancrée or an ornamented cross-on-globule reverse. In the course of our research, we have been able to locate 4 other specimens from this mint having come to auction, only one of which was of a similar reverse type (Jean Vinchon Numismatique December 2019, Lot 7). Of essentially flawless striking quality, and of the utmost rarity.
