Carolingian. Charlemagne (768-814) Denier ND (793-814) AU58 NGC, Melle mint, Class 3, MEC I-923-931, MG-1063, Dep-606 (Charlemagne of Charles the Bald), Nou-94 (cf. Nou-40 under Charles the Bald). 1.71gm. +CΛRLVS REX FR, cross pattée / +METVLLO, Karolus monogram. Atypically attractive for this well-known type that often comes as a hoard coin, resulting in bent and irregularly patinated pieces. Quite in contrast, this specimen is ideally centered and near-perfectly round with an allover slate patina punctuated by underlying luster and hints of gold and sky-blue tone. Though traditionally attributed to either Charlemagne or Charles the Bald (as is the case on the holder), Simon Coupland has more recently published diagnostics for distinguishing the Melle deniers of the two rulers, this coin soundly belonging to the issues of the former.
