Carolingian. Lothar (Lothaire) III or IV Denier ND (954-986) XF40 NGC, Bourges mint, cf. MEC I-pg. 555 (see note after MEC I-1006), MG-1666, Dep-206, Nou-7 (Lothaire II). 1.21gm. +LOTERIVS REX, cross pattée / BITVRICES CIVITΛS, temple portico. An appealing emission of the final Carolingian king in West Francia, especially given the type's usually unattractive appearance. We have offered only one Denier of Lothar III previously--in the Morris Collection--and while that piece was technically certified finer (XF45), we would suppose that the present coin is actually more attractive.
