Charles VI (1380-1422) gold 1/2 Heaume d'Or ND (1418?) MS64 NGC, La Rochelle mint (annulet below 9th letter), Fr-296, cf. Ciani-501 (there, with only saltire in one spandrel), cf. Dup-374A (here, with group of three pellets and saltire in two spandrels). 2.56gm. +KAROLVS: DЄI: GRACIA: FRAHCORVm: RЄX (most of legend not visible), French arms beneath a crowned and draped helm / + XPC • VINCIT • XPC • RЄGNAT • XPC • IMPЄRAT (mullet stops), cross fleurée with lis in angles, all within quatrefoil, lis in all but the fourth (saltire) and eighth (group of three pellets) spandrels. An astoundingly challenging type that comes almost universally minted on undersized flans, resulting in generally limited legibility to the legends. Witnessed here on the very cusp of Gem Mint State with complete clarity to the central motifs, it is especially notable that the Briand Collection only contained a mere AU Details, whereas our sale of the Sanssouci Collection did not even contain an example of the type at all; the only other certified at this level that we are aware of last sold for over $15,000 in June 2021.
