Louis XVI gold 1/2 Louis d'Or 1784/2-A AU55 NGC, Paris mint, KM573.1, Dup-1705, Gad-357 (R4; overdate not listed). A highly elusive type produced in a total mintage of only 766 pieces and consequently very rarely seen at auction. When it comes to such rarity, one can usually not afford to be very selective from a quality standpoint. However, no such compromise is necessary in this case, as the offering at hand leaves nothing wanting, coupling a bold strike with flashy brilliance and a generally extremely clean appearance for a circulated coin, avoiding any distracting instances of handling. A salt-white and amber-tinged patina only heightens the visual effect in hand, cementing the appeal of this exceptionally pleasing AU specimen.
