Stephen (1135-1154), Penny, Cross Pommée type, [BMC VII], Dunwich, Nicole, nicole on dvne :, 1.31g/2h (cf. EMC 2007.0141 and SNC April 2007, HS 2829; BMC –; Mack –; N 881; S 1282). Struck on a squarish flan, about very fine and excessively rare, apparently the second known specimen £800-£1,000

---

In the entire Middle Ages, the only coins attributed to the mint of Dunwich were struck in the reign of Stephen, during the decade c. 1145-55 (BMC types II, VI and VII). EMC lists a total of 14 coins for Dunwich, of which five are cut fractions. Of the nine pennies, 2 are type II, 6 are type VI (plus seven in the 1989 Wicklewood Hoard) and there is a unique coin of type VII (referenced above). Although made up from from similar punches, it is from different dies to the present specimen
